Psychologist Simon van Gaal received an NWO Rubicon grant for his project 'Measuring consciousness in damaged and healthy brains'. This research will be conducted at the Neurospin institute in Paris, France.

Young UvA talent receives Heineken Young Scientists Award

CSCA-researcher Paola Escudero was selected as winner of the Heineken Young Scientists Awards by the Dutch Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). In addition to Escudero, four other excellent young scientists received the prize which was awarded for the first time this year. The winners each receive €10,000 and an artwork.

UvA researchers see mental disorder as a network of symptoms

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) have developed a new explanation for mental disorders such as depression. They interpret a mental disorder as a network of symptoms, rather than a specific biological abnormality. This network approach could offer an explanation for the fact that although mental disorders like depression are to a large extent hereditary, nobody so far has been able to find the 'depression gene'. The findings of the CSCA researchers were published on 30 June 2010 on the Behavioral and Brain Sciences website.

Synchronisation of brain structures in storing important information

Two brain structures synchronise their activities when storing valuable information. This synchronisation between the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex may be caused by the chemical dopamine. This is the conclusion of researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the CNRS-Collège de France. The results of their study have been published in the latest edition of the neuroscience journal Neuron

'Bonding hormone' provokes aggression towards competing out-groups

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) have discovered a neurobiological cause of intergroup conflict for the first time. They assert that oxytocine, a neuropeptide produced in the brain that functions as hormone and neurotransmitter, leads humans to give preference to their own group and act aggressively towards competing out-groups. This finding qualifies the widespread belief that oxytocin makes people kinder and more altruistic. Their results were published in Science.

Summer School on Neuroeconomics: a great success

The CSCA Summer School 2010 ‘Neuroeconomics: An exciting joint venture' was a great success. Approximately 80 young scientists (master as well as PhD students) from many countries (a.o. the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, USA) participated in this interdisciplinary Summer School. Since Neuroeconomics is a relatively new area of research, very few Summer Schools are held on this subject - making this a unique experience for participants and lecturers.

Henkjan Honing endowed chair in music cognition

Dr H.J. Honing (1959) has been named professor by special appointment of Music Cognition at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Humanities, effective 1 September 2010. The coming three years he will be hold the Hendrik Muller chair, designated on behalf of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences' (KNAW) Academy Chairs in the Humanities Foundation.
