Career Prospect

Master’s degree

Upon successful completion of the research master programme you will be awarded the title Master of Science (MSc) in Brain and Cognitive Sciences.

Career Outlook

The programme provides graduates with the necessary theoretical / intellectual and empirical tools to pursue an academic career (Ph.D. programme) in neuro and cognitive sciences or in one of the disciplines related to it. Their added value to these programmes is ensured by their interdisciplinary master's training. Apart from academic research, graduates in brain and cognitive sciences also find work in applied research. Depending on the direction of specialisation, prospective career fields include the IT-sector (e.g. interaction design, usability and knowledge management), education, biomedical and clinical research, as well as the areas of economy, consulting, human resources, and science writing. Graduates of this master programme are especially suited to work in highly interdisciplinary areas, bringing experience in mediating between disciplines. The generic skills (such as teamwork, ability to communicate, reflection and evaluation skills, ability to quickly learn and adapt) acquired by graduates are of use in all variety of careers.

What are your possibilities?

Universities

The Brain and Cognitive Sciences programme provides a sound basis for a PhD-trajectory. More than 70% of our alumni have obtained PhD positions soon after graduating at institutions including the UvA, Princeton University, Birbeck University London, VU University Amsterdam, Radboud University Nijmegen, Leiden University and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Private or (semi)governmental research organisations

These settings may put to use graduates in-depth training in brain and cognitive sciences, their highly sophisticated methodological skills, and their willingness to challenge dominant views and technologies. A few of our alumni are for example employed by the Max Planck Institute.

Other

Furthermore, Brain and Cognitive Sciences alumni found work in Product Development, Management and ICT, or started their own company
