Study Abroad

Study abroad

If you want to conduct your research project abroad, it is advisable to discuss your plans with the Study Advisors. The Study Advisors can provide you with useful information, help you in making the necessary arrangements and put you in contact with the International Office if necessary. Preparations for a study abroad period can take 6 to 10 months, depending on your plans, so don’t wait too long if this is what you want.

For more information, you can also look at www.uva.nl/internationaal (only Dutch) or www.student.uva.nl/english/faq (under UvA Abroad).

International Research Project and scholarships

If you would like to go abroad for your research internship, we advise you to start arranging things well in advance. Keep in mind that it is generally necessary to start arranging your internship a year or at least a half a year in advance.

The first step is to start orientating on interesting research topics and finding the institutes doing research on those topics. For this you can either use the network of researchers at the UvA involved in the topics you find interesting by looking at the information on our website: www.csca.nl (under Research or under Education, Education, Current Student, Research Projects for). Here you will find current research that is being done in the field of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. Dutch researchers and lecturers commonly have their own international network, which can help you find a place.

You can also start by looking at articles on topics you find interesting and approach the authors or use Google to find the international research institutes involved in the type of research you’d like to pursue.

For projects within Europe

For research projects within Europe, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies has scholarships available through the Erasmus internship programme. These scholarships consist of a monthly allowance of 200 Euros, usually for a maximum period of 6 months.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • You are registered as a full time student at the UvA
  • You haven’t received an Erasmus internship scholarship (formerly Leonardo) before
  • You do not receive a STUNT travel scholarship (see below) for the same period abroad
  • Your project will be awarded at the UvA with credits (EC) (this is the case for all projects that are approved by the Board of Examiners and we always assume you will arrange this in case of a research project)
  • You have to be abroad for at least 3 months

If you commence your project in the first semester (between September 1 and January 31), you have to hand in your scholarship application on August 1 at the latest by sending in the Erasmus internship form (see form below) with the necessary attachments.

If you commence your project in the second semester (between February 1 and August 31), you have to hand in your scholarship application on January 1 at the latest.

You can send the Erasmus internship form to the Study Advisors, Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, Sarphatistraat 104, 1018 GV, Amsterdam.

Please take into account that you have to have official proof of your participation in the project before that date and that you have to attach an official letter from your supervisor to your scholarship application. Besides that, the institute where you will be conducting your research has to be willing to sign the Erasmus Training Agreement for you (see form below). When in doubt, we advise you to check this with your international supervisor beforehand.

There is only a limited amount of scholarships available. In case there are more applications than scholarships, a selection will be made. If you haven’t been selected, you will be placed on a waiting list. Sometimes, later on in the year, extra money becomes available and we might be able to grant you a scholarship at this later stage. The waiting list procedure also counts for students who hand in their scholarship applications after the deadline.

If you are not selected for an Erasmus scholarship, you can still apply for a STUNT scholarship for the same period. See for more information on this the section below on projects outside of Europe.
